Personalization Better Security through Personalization

Personalization of security documents can involve either electronic or optical personalization.

Most modern ID cards and passports now contain chips with biometric data. For optical and electronic personalization of security documents, specialized software is needed to prepare the personalization machines. These devices include an integrated RFID reader capable of handling both contactless and contact-based smart cards.

For security documents the optical personalization is typically performed by laser printer or retransfer printer, which prints on a transparent film and is then bonded to the card. Alternatively it is possible to print directly on security documents using the dye-sublimation procedure (involving printing via ribbon in different colors).

Laser, dye-sub or both

Veridos has extensive experience with many types of personalization machines and is aware of the advantages and pitfalls of each approach. While personalization with lasered pictures and letters is considered to offer the highest security level, retransfer and dye-sub can produce more colorful design options. A combination of both is available from Veridos using its LPI® (laser protected Image) feature.

Support for many printers and standards

All personalization projects handled by Veridos involve specialists for laser and card body technology to ensure optimal results. Veridos negotiates the architectures for central or decentralized personalization, drawing on the proven track record from its adaptable IMAGO personalization software framework. IMAGO also offers add-on components to personalize ID cards according to ISO standard and Giesecke & Devrient’s high-performance PDI format, which is compliant with Mastercard & Visa (EMV) regulations.
